“Questions about silent-language acquisition in a digital environment”

For those of you who can’t resist speculating on the (in)communicative futures of the facebook generation, Mark Bauerlein has an interesting opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal:

Why Gen-Y Johnny Can’t Read Nonverbal Cues: An emphasis on social networking puts younger people at a face-to-face disadvantage.

    Thanks for sharing this, David.

Baurlein writes in The Dumbest Generation that our youth don’t read enough. In this article, he claims that in fact they write too much, and the ways that they’re writing are having a negative impact on their posture.

So, in the good old days, when youth were perfect, literate, and untroubled, did they read, though not write, and stand up straight, looking us elders straight in the eye? This is yet another entry into the long, recurrent narrative of adolescent decline. At some point, devolution has to happen, right?
